Ministries

Following the words of Jesus in Matthew, Chapter 25 to visit the sick and visit those in prison and "whenever you do this for the least important of these followers of mine, you do it for me." members of St. Columba's Church visit the Memory Care unity of Lantern Crest once a month and the Independent Living shut-ins twice a month.

We provide a church service at both locations consisting of a simple service from our Prayer Book with appointed readings for that Sunday, a brief sermon and the singing of familiar/popular hymns. The services provide spiritual feeding to those who are not able to obtain it because of their physical restrictions.

The program has been well received by both the residents and staff of Lantern Crest, as well as members of St. Columba's who participate.

Participating members express a joy in bringing the Word and visiting those that are in need.  In addition to Lantern Crest, St. Columba's participates with Carleton Hills Lutheran Church to provide a Sunday morning service to Edgemoor Hospital in Santee every other month and we are looking to reach other shut-ins at local hospitals and rehab centers.

Come and join us in feeding and bringing joy to the poor in spirit.

Cursillo Weekend

Cursillo in Christianity is a movement within the church that, through a method of its own tries to, and through God's grace manages to; enable the essential realities of the Christian to come to life in the uniqueness, originality, and creativity of each person.

The Cursillo Movement is introduced over a consecutive seventy-two hour period called a "Three Day Weekend," which begins Thursday evening and ends Sunday evening, a team of religious and lay personnel present a series of talks to the candidates and the entire group calls upon the Holy Spirit for enlightenment and guidance.  The team and candidates live as a small Christian com-munity over the weekend and discuss these talks in small groups.  The discussions provide an opportunity to share insights about the presentations and hear how others received that same presentation.

The talks and discussions cover a variety of topics including:
  • The lay person's role within the Church
  • Meaning of grace and sacraments
  • Importance of prayer and the study of God
  • Christian  leadership and living Christianity in community
  • Our call to bring Christ to others and transform the very environments in which we live
  • The importance of supporting one another in our efforts to live a truly Christian life

Throughout the weekend the participants will pray together, attend daily mass, and have an opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation, and develop a deeper relation-ship with Jesus Christ.

Stephen Ministers

Picture
Stephen Ministry (since 1975) is the one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place in congregations that use the Stephen Series system. Stephen Ministry congregations equip and empower lay caregivers —called Stephen Ministers— to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.

The best way to understand how Stephen Ministry works is to learn about three groups of people involved in this ministry: Stephen Leaders, Stephen Ministers, and care receivers.

Stephen Leaders establish and direct Stephen Ministry in a congregation to:
  • Build awareness of Stephen Ministry within the congregation and community
  • Recruit and train Stephen Ministers
  • Meet with potential care receivers to assess their needs
  • Match care receivers with Stephen Ministers
  • Provide Stephen Ministers with ongoing supervision and continuing education.

People learn to serve as Stephen Leaders by attending a Leader’s Training Course—a one-week conference that introduces the resources used to lead Stephen Ministry, develops key skills, and gets people excited about this caring ministry. Most congregations begin with two to four Stephen Leaders, typically including a pastor, possibly another church staff person, and one or more lay leaders.
